VELTRA Corporation today announced the findings of its "2025 Summer Tours & Activities Travel Trends Report". The report analyzes VELTRA's booking data for overseas local activities scheduled from June 1 to August 31, 2025.
The report reveals several key trends shaping Japanese overseas travel for Summer 2025:
While Oahu, Hawaii, remains the top destination, Europe (especially Paris) and North America (Los Angeles, Las Vegas) have seen a notable increase in popularity. This surge is likely driven by the stronger yen, making travel to the US more affordable, and a growing desire to visit aspirational cities. Conversely, some major Asian cities have seen a relative decline in rankings, possibly due to the diminished perception of value caused by exchange rate fluctuations.
Traditional resort experiences, such as Hawaiian sunset cruises and marine activities, continue to be popular. In Asia, historical and cultural tours like the Ayutthaya ruins and DMZ tours are highly sought after. European and American travelers favor grand natural experiences like the Grand Canyon and iconic world heritage/scenic tours such as Mont Saint-Michel. Desert safaris represent a popular unique cultural experience in the Middle East and Africa. Across all regions, there is a clear trend towards seeking convenient and efficient transportation options.
The average customer spend per booking for local experience activities has increased significantly by 43% overall year-on-year. This ongoing trend is primarily attributed to the combined effects of the yen's depreciation, rising airfares, and increased local prices. Asia saw a substantial increase of 34% in average spend, indicating that its previous affordability advantage compared to other regions may be diminishing. Hawaii, however, experienced a more modest 4% increase in average spend.
Bookings for "sightseeing tours" increased by approximately 4%, and "airport transfers" rose by 1.5%. This signifies a growing emphasis among travelers on seeking convenient, smooth, and reassuring services for overseas travel and arrangements. Furthermore, there's an increasing interest in securing "tickets" in advance as part of a well-planned itinerary and a growing demand for "private tours" for more personalized experiences.
